kenneth yuers
Originally from the East Bay, California, specifically Oakland, Kenneth joined the Air Force upon graduating high school, serving from 1986-1990 as a Law Enforcement Specialist. A chance meeting with Ronald Reagan, four years prior to his presidency, inspired Ken to enlist, wanting to support Reagan's efforts to end the Cold War. Upon his Honorable Discharge, Ken attended Junior College and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Arts from California State University, Chico in 1997; a year later - earning his teaching credential. After spending two years as a police & fire 911 dispatcher in Hayward, CA he turned his attention to education. He taught 8th grade at a private school, and soon found his niche teaching grade-7 to grade-9 "at risk" students from 1999-2014. In 2015, he began teaching students at Rancho Tehama Elementary. In November of 2017, Ken heard gunfire and quickly got students inside their classrooms. Despite the rampage, only one student was seriously injured and none were killed. In March of 2018, the California Legislature honored Kenneth with a Certificate of Recognition for his part in saving lives. He was also recognized for his "grit and fortitude under trying circumstances" as an Honorary Submariner of Cuttlefish Base, U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc., for demonstrating that he is a survivor. Ken was also awarded the California Teachers Association "Outstanding Educator" award in 2018, by the Shasta Cascade Service Center Council.
